Personal Security Measures
by David P. Roberts
The following non-definitive list of domestic security measures are recommended for positive consideration:
- All external doors should be fitted with mortise locks.
- External doors and retaining frames should be of solid construction.
- Approved "Chain" Systems should be applied to all external doors, if appropriate.
- Opening windows at basement and ground levels should be fitted with locks, as should all accessible windows situated on other floor levels.
- Suitable electronic systems can supplement the security of windows, with advice on their application always sought in advance.
- During the hours of darkness movement to and around the premises to be protected can be readily identified by means of movement and/or heat detecting switches. In any event, the area should always be well lit with the appropriate equipment attached to the property shedding light outwards and onto anyone approaching the building. All to often, mainly for aesthetic effect, lights are placed in gardens, illuminating the property. Since such a scenario benefits anyone who wishes to approach the property covertly, this should be avoided.
- Allocate keys carefully and never leave them outside the premises under any circumstances. In the event of a reported loss, change the locks accordingly. Resist the temptation to have the address and name of the occupant attached to any bunch of keys.
- Allocate only those keys that are necessary to facilitate access.
- Control the growth of shrubbery along all access routes and perimeters of the property. Do not provide cover for a potential assailant to hide themselves in anticipation of a physical confrontation.
- Anticipate electrical faults and failures. Have available independent lighting sources on the premises, i.e. torches, candles etc. since they are essential for the security for your family.
- Insist on advance notice of attendance by visitors-friends and relatives alike.
- Satisfy yourself regarding the credentials of visiting workmen and ancillary staff members. Satisfy yourself about their status BEFORE opening any door. NEVER leave them alone on the property.
- Unexpectedly late callers to the property should not be allowed unqualified access under any circumstances. Again, satisfy yourself about their credentials in advance of opening any external door.
- Make a habit of checking all the internal security provisions in force at the residence in advance of retiring for the night.
- Retain all waste bins and other waste disposal units within a secure area and be sure to destroy all items of personal correspondence prior to disposing of them. Anyone seeking to acquire information about the occupant of a particular residence will, in general, find all the information they want-and more besides-in the contents of domestic waste.
